Vitamin Deficiencies

Vitamins, as the name implies are essential to keep ourselves healthy; we need all of them in the correct amounts. There are various types of vitamins and each one of them has their own letter, each vitamin is also involved in different functions of the body.  If we don’t have the right amounts of vitamins we will see that our health starts deteriorating as the body can perform they way it used to.  As the vitamin levels get lower and lower, sickness and diseases will appear.

Vitamin deficiencies are varied, and so are the symptoms.  A great amount of vitamins also act as anti-oxidants, so as their level decreases, high levels of oxidants and free radical will appear – something very harmful. If this happens there can be damage in cell membranes and could lead to the appearance of cancer, heart disease, cataracts, and can even speed up the aging process.

The primary cause of vitamin deficiency problems is an improper diet or malnutrition. Vitamins are all get from food sources, expect vitamin D which is processed thanks to the rays of the Sun.  A diet with lack of nutrients will decrease or vitamin levels.  As an example of this, we know that people following vegetarian diets are prone to develop a B12 vitamin deficiency.  Why? Because B12 is acquired through animal food, so they need to either take supplements of vitamin B12 or eat also fortified cereals.

It is important to know that many of the symptoms are not linked exclusively with a vitamin deficiency problem. That’s the reason why we should go medical exams first to determine we indeed are suffering from vitamin deficiency.

The treatment is commonly oral supplementation, but there are exceptions.  Treatment must be followed until the vitamin levels are back to normal. In the case of vitamin C for example, a patient may need 1-2 weeks to fully recover his/her health after following oral supplementation treatment.

The best way to prevent vitamin deficiencies is by having a good diet and eating raw, healthy food.  It is known that factor such as processed foods can intervene in the formation of vitamin deficiency symptoms.
