Vitamin D Deficiency

The term vitamin D deficiency applies when there are lower tan normal vitamin D levels in your body. We all need vitamins because each one help us in life, in this specific case, vitamin D is helpful to develop strong bones and muscles as it helps regulating the phosphorus and calcium levels in the blood.

The people who are at more risk of having this type of vitamin deficiency are pregnant women, children, breastfed children and people who don’t go outside too much. This is because vitamin D in the body is produced thanks to the help of the sunlight. And why is it present in children and pregnant women? Because they are in a stage in life where they have more vitamin D requirements to grow.

Vitamin D deficiency is one of the most common types of vitamin deficiency, and this is largely because people are unaware of the problem (they don’t link aches and tiredness with it) or don’t feel the symptoms. However, there are people who do feel some symptoms, they include:

  • Bone pain. The pain is more acute on the back and legs.
  • Muscular pain and weakness. This happens with different severity, some people are unable to even stand up without pain.
  • In children it can manifest as soft bones (curved legs and soft teeth), and in severe cases as breathing difficulties and seizures.

Among the causes of vitamin D deficiency we have: problems with its absorption, lack of exposure to sunlight, poor vitamin D on breast milk, and it also can appear as the result of using certain medications. If you present this kind of deficiency, it is important to follow the recommendations of a qualified doctor who will give you proper treatment according to your own case. There is no standard treatment for this deficiency.

I would strongly advise reading Adelle Davis’ book, let’s get well, very good information in that book on vitamin D. You cannot buy the book new,but can get it used. As far as I am concerned it is the bible for health conscious people.
